Bari’s architecture in Barivm’s photography
The Instagram profile curated by four young architects reveals the architectural beauty of the city of Bari.
Architects have a keen eye for capturing the hidden beauty of a city through their photography. Barivm is a project led by architects Nicola Cavallera, Dario Monsellato, Nicolò Montuori, and Francesco Paolo Protomastro, who started documenting the architecture of Bari on Instagram in 2022. Their photographs showcase the city’s rich history of 20th-century construction, starting with the opulent Art Nouveau style of the century’s early years, which can be seen in the grandeur of Bari’s most beautiful “Palazzi”.
The expansion of fascism had a lasting effect on Bari’s coastal boundaries, encompassing the waterfront and structures near the Murat district on one side and the old town on the other. This strategic move was part of Mussolini’s plan, with Araldo di Crollalanza, the Minister of Public Works and a native of Bari, playing a significant role in its execution.
I find the testimonies on architecture from the post-World War II era to the 1990s to be particularly remarkable. Even though some of these buildings may look like not having a significant historical appearance, they still manage to evoke a story. They are a fusion of past visions of a bright future and practical expressions of the comfort and convenience of a bygone era that we can no longer experience.
With the hope that the project will take other multimedia forms, all that remains is to follow this Instagram profile with which to look at Bari with fresh eyes.
